Life is not a Solo Act :oSaC: by Fates-Exile Life is not a Solo Act :oSaC: by Fates-Exile
YES! Another rp picture xD I'm hoping to do at least one picture per rp I have! I must say I'm very happy with how this came out, especially the stone background. Let me explain the unique shape of the stone walls in kindlesteps den. Being a cave by the ocean I believe that it was once under water, the water once upon a time carving out the shape of the stone, hence the flow like structure.

I DID NOT rip any one off with the quote, I thought of it myself and it is kindlesteps quote got it?

Enjoy! And here is the rp

Ivorypaw grumbled the whole way back to the seaside camp, her ears flat against her skull and her blue gaze blazing. She was fine! Perfectly fine…it was just a small scrape. The pale feline did her best not to limp, deliberately stepping on it and biting back winces; she didn’t want her clanmates knowing she had wounded herself so foolishly. She and her mentor Rowanstep had been out training again, and she had slipped on one of the beach stones and cut her paw on something sharp. She didn’t stick around long enough to find out exactly what it had been. The salty shore had left a relentless sting, but the scrape wasn’t really that bad the more she thought about it. Her teacher had sent her back stubbornly, claiming that it would get infected even though it was so tiny, but Ivorypaw was sceptical of that being his real reason. It was no mystery that she small she-cat didn’t get a lot of sleep, and yesterday her nightmares had been more taxing than usual. She had been sloppy and slow during her lessons…she suspected Rowanstep could tell her focus wasn’t fully on the tasks he had assigned her. Does he think a trip to the Medicine Cat will make me a better Apprentice? Pshaw! Maybe when hedgehogs fly, her thoughts continued on sourly, and soon she found herself limping again.

Truth be told, Ivorypaw had never met the TidalClan medicine cat before, and was a bit curious on what they did. Could they really ward off infection so easily? Her cut was pretty dirty, and her whole paw seemed to throb because of it. Ow. Ow. Ow. Finally making her way back into her Clan’s camp, she stared around stupidly for the den where Kindlepath was supposed to stay. Well, she thought Kindlepath was his name… surely that was what her mentor had said? Kindlepath, Kindlefoot, Kindledindle? Hmmm, none of them seemed right. Oh well! Continuing along in her less than cheerful mood, it wasn’t too hard for the small she-cat to follow the strong smell of herbs and berries that lead to the gaping whole in the cave wall. It made her nose wrinkle, but she didn’t want to seem rude by screwing up her face at this tom’s home. Pushing her head into the cavern, she called out: “Kindledindle?”

Kindlestep spent his morning drying seaweed and giving quarter portions of strengthening herbs to apprentices, all of them complaining about an apprentice in the den keeping them up with their kicking, mumbling and whining. Kindlestep had his paws full enough keeping his stocks up and he would have to make a note to see the apprentices again to find out which cat was disturbing the sleep of so many. ' I'll need to wait for this batch of seaweed to dry so I can grind half of it and then make half the grinds into a poultice and store the other half carefully to make sure it stays dry. The with the ungrinded half I'll cut up and use to rewrap and preserve the little herbs I have to work with' He thought quietly to himself. He found seaweed to be very effective in soothing the elders irritability and extreme weight loss.

He had just started grinding some of the seaweed when he heard someone call him from the entrance of his den, well, kind of. He Smiled softly and glanced back at the brown and white face poking around the moss covered entrance " Yes I'm here, though that's a new name that I haven't been called yet, did I miss the ceremony where Swiftstar changed my name?" He purred kindly, washing his paws in a little stream trickling from one of the cave walls before padding over to the intact strips, taking them over to the small piles of herbs airing out " Do you need some strengthening herbs as well? It seems I've seen the entirety of the apprentice den today " He commented, somewhat to himself.

The small feline parted her jaws to inquire about his real name when she paused. “W…were you chewing on seaweed?” The tom she blinked at was an average height, with bright amber eyes that seemed to gaze at her curiously, but without any hostility or distrust. Ivorypaw felt very confused; she didn’t like not knowing what was going on, but this was a whole new level of strange. He looked so normal, but smelled so different than her other Clanmates. The she-cat wondered if she smelt odd to him, too. Maybe she didn’t spend enough time getting to know how the other ranks worked? Cocking her head to the side, one of her furry ears flicked - most would think it a bit rude of her to walk in and start asking questions already, but she had never been good at holding her tongue, and she was still trying to figure out what to think. ”Er, I never knew seaweed was a medicine,” she added innocently, with a slight smile. Yeah… this was weird.

Remembering that there was more to what the Medicine cat had said, she cautiously made her way deeper into the cavern and took a pause to stare around. A soft gurgle filled the room – so faint Ivorypaw’s long-furred ears almost couldn’t hear it. The source was of a small stream where Kindlestep had washed his paws, and with all the herbs and things stocked around it, it was hard for the she-cat to keep her attention in one place. ”The entirety of the apprentice den?” she echoed curiously, forcing herself into a sit and seem like she had at least some kind of manners. She didn’t remember hearing of any illnesses or anything spreading to her den-mates, but come to think of it she hasn’t spoken with any of them for a while recently. Not entirely sure what strengthening herbs did, she shrugged and held out her paw gingerly. ”Did they all scrape their paws, too?” She couldn’t help but chime, knowing it was foolish but still half-hoping she wasn’t the only one to slip during training. Nevertheless, having heard that she wasn’t the only apprentice to have to stop by the Medicine Cat’s den did make her feel a bit more at ease.

Kindlestep let out a soft chuckle at her curious and caught off guard question about the seaweed in his mouth. He placed it next to the herbs before giving each pile a sniff, looking over at the ivorypaw who made her way into the cool cavern. She was average height for an apprentice, her blue eyes betraying her confusion. " No I wasn't chewing on it apprentice, though it would only do me good. " He purred. She smelled of the ocean and sand, but there was also a faint trace of the grass and wind, not unusual for apprentices and warriors. He noticed her awkwardness and gave the last pile of poppy a quick sniff, leaving the herbs to walk over to her, dipping his head to her kindly " Most would think seaweed didn't, but curiosity got the best of me and I collected a bit, experimented, and found it has many uses. I grind it to make poultice to hold bandaging and keep scraps and cuts from infection, I sprinkle some of the dry crushed seaweed into the elders foods and it helps with their fatigue and I've also found they tend to remember the past seasons from when I started the experimenting better than previous seasons, put wet seaweed on dry skin and it cures that and slows down hair loss, I'm sorry, I'm probably boring you with all of this " he purred.

He sat down infront of her and nodded though in slight worry " Yes. They all came in here one after another complaining about lack of sleep with some other apprentice keeping them up the past few nights, I figured you wanted some strengthening herbs to take the edge off your weariness as well but that's apparently not the case." He looked her over and noticed sand sticking to one of her paws with sticky blood. He gave it a quick sniff and nudged her over gently Clean up your paw for me at the stream trickle over there while I go grab some cobwebs- Oh and you wouldn't mind me using the seaweed poultice would you? I'm running low on horsetail and would like to save that for the elders. " he rumbled calmly as he padded away to collect some cobwebs from his stash and gathering a couple of other little herbs, looking over at her to make sure she went over to rinse off her paw. He turned his attention back to the herbs, grabbing a poppyseed, a bit of marigold and comfrey, placed them in the cobwebs and carried them over to the apprentice. " I never caught your name, it would make conversations easier if I knew it " He teased lightly, slightly mumbled by the herbs he was carrying.

Listening through his lecture on seaweed, Ivorypaw couldn’t help but fidget. There were smells and cool things everywhere, and she felt a childish desire to poke and prod at all of them. But despite the ear and whisker flicks she preformed for the sake of movement, the she-cat actually managed to absorb a lot of what he was saying to her. ”So you kinda made it a medicine? That’s pretty cool,” she admitted, glancing back at what she had previously seen as nothing but a gooey, slimy, useless nuisance. Well, it was still gooey and slimy, and still a nuisance, but maybe it wasn’t as useless as she had once assumed. She wasn’t easily impressed, but she was so sceptical of it all, she couldn’t help but feel pretty baffled when he told her all of its possible uses. Not that she was interested in having it rubbed all over her smooth pelt anytime soon!

Ivorypaw glanced back over at Kindlestep; other apprentices were complaining about a lack of sleep? She felt her ears burn, and started to stare at the cut in her paw as if it were the most interesting thing in the world. ”Heh, really? That’s not too good,” she said dryly. Even if she was asleep, it wasn’t hard to figure out her nightmares were disrupting the rest of more than just herself. She’d wake up on the other side of her nest, with about two new cats glaring at her in the morning. She felt a bit embarrassed by it, and she was starting to run out of fake dreams to spin to them. All these epic tales of her being a warrior and fighting off enemy clans…they’d figure out sooner or later it was a ruse if she didn’t come up with some kind of resolution to all of this. Maybe she could sleep outside? She was sure they couldn’t mind, but it was freezing out there, and her own selfish pang made her feel much less inclined to go with that idea. They’d just have to toughen up; they should thank her! She’s gradually training them to become heavy sleepers, so no more worrying about rain or anything foolish like that keeping them awake…right? She distracted herself form the train of thought; it was making her feel uneasy, and she was sure the Medicine cat was far from unobservant. ”Clean my…? Oh, right! I’ll get on that. And…sure.” the drop of enthusiasm in her voice was all but subtle. She recalled the thought a moment ago towards her dislike of seaweed, and felt her nose wrinkle up in distaste. She would have to wear it! StarClan forbid the other apprentices found out she lathered spit-covered seaweed on herself, or she’d be laughed at for moons! She doubted many of them knew its medical uses, but with a sigh, she obediently made her way over to the trickling stream and dipped her snowy paw beneath the water’s surface. If it made her cut feel better, she’d have to swallow any distaste of Kindlestep’s methods; he knew a lot more about this stuff than she, and all she wanted was to get back to her warrior her training. If she fell behind, she didn’t know what she’d do!

Glancing down at the stuff he had placed near her, she listened to the comment with a slight smirk, already hard at work trying to forget about icky, gooey medicine stuff she’d have rubbed into her wound. What if it stung? She had no problem with physical pain though; she could take blow after blow and get right back up. It was just the thought of it that made her….iffy. ”My name’s Ivorypaw,” she stated plainly. ”Can I keep calling you Kindledindle, or am I forgetting half of your name?” She added innocently, knowing secretly that she’d probably keep calling him Kindledindle anyway.

Kindlestep paused on his way back over to her as she mentioned that he in a sense created a medicine. Yes he did he guessed but he didn't care much for credit, the fact that this was another way to heal certain ailments was enough for him and he closed the rest of the distance between himself and Ivorypaw " I guess. " he shrugged, sitting infront of her he waiting for her to finish rinsing most the dirt off her cut and raised her paw up to his face with a paw of his own. She got most of it out he noted but when it comes to infection you can never be too sure and he dipped her paw back in the water and gently rubbed any excess dirt off the gash " Not that I don't trust you but you came in here with four paws and I'd like you to leave with four paws, not three." he chuckled gently, keeping his amber-orange gaze on her paw that he was tending too.

Glancing over to the herbs he grabbed he realized he had forgotten some elderberries to aid the seaweed in keeping infection from setting in. He took his paws out of the water and rubbed them dry on some nearby moss " I forgot some elderberries I'll be- " He stopped as he looked at her and realized she was fidgeting and, uncomfortable? Curiosity pricked at his fur but he didn't bring it up " Actually, if you keep off that paw, could you grab me two of them? they are small white flower-like herbs, kind of look like honeysuckle. " He purred as he started mixing some dried crushed seaweed with water to make it into a poultice. He started thinking on how he made her uncomfortable. Was it something he said to her? Was the seaweed really that dreadful of an option? If it was he wouldn't want her to be that upset about it. He called over his shoulder " You know, if you really don't want the seaweed poultice I could always try and substitute it with some extra elderberries, it wouldn't be any trouble, I'd just have to make sure to search for some tonight. " he offered.

The poultice finished for a future patient if Ivorypaw took him up on his offer he looked over at his shoulders as she gave him her name. Ivorypaw sounded familiar. Right! Swiftstar shared some tidbits about her fiery attitude and the need to constantly be on the move and his whiskers twitched. There was something else mentioned but he couldn't quite recall, swiftstar had been pulled away from him by some warriors to discuss apprentices and honestly he had turned most of his attention to the herbs by then. He snapped his attention back to Ivorypaw and smirked " It's definitely the most creative alteration of my name, and if that's what you really want to call me then to you I am Kindledindle. Nice to meet you Ivorypaw, now come on, give me your paw before I have to amputate it and they have to change your name to Stumpypaw." He purred, his stubby tail twitching in amusement at her. She didn't seem to care that the name could have offended him, not that it did, he personally enjoyed the fact that she thought that was his name!

Glancing back up at Kindlestep in surprise, she realized he wanted her to go and get something. ”Small white flowers? Sure sure,” she mewed, keeping off her paw obediently and repeating the description in her head as she hobbled over to the array of flowers and leaves and berries. She had no clue what Honeysuckle was, but surely there couldn’t be too many white flowers, right? Unless she grabbed honeysuckle by accident, which well…would be a tad embarrassing. All she had been asked to do was find a flower, after all. When her sapphire eyes fell upon the small cluster of ivory-petal plants, she grabbed a pair of them swiftly and hoped that she had the right ones. Their strong scent wafted up into her nose, and she wasted no time returning to the medicine cat so she could gingerly remove them from her mouth. Still grimacing slightly, she couldn’t help but voice her questions aloud: ”Do all these smells and tastes ever bother you? Or is it all…normal to you now?” Keeping her sore paw off the ground, she tilted her head to the side.

When Kindlestep seemed to have noticed Ivorypaw’s discomfort of the seaweed, she felt her face flush slightly. She didn’t want to seem weak! ”Naah, don’t worry about it. I can handle a bit of seaweed, no problem” she grinned innocently. It was true, as much as she didn’t like the seaweed, she didn’t want to have to deal with the guilt that would come from taking the last of the elderberries. Especially if old cats needed them, right? Ivorypaw actually had a bit of a fondness of Sleetgaze, the old she-cat the apprentices had to help with ticks occasionally. Glancing back over at the medicine cat with a bemused expression, she decided she really didn’t want to be named Stumpypaw. Doing her best to sit still as she handed over her paw to the strange but gentle tom, she could help but speak her mind yet again. She was too curious. “So, hm, these apprentices you mentioned that were coming in because of restless nights… did they happen to mention who seemed to have been keeping them awake? Just for curiosity’s sake,” the last part of her question was tacked on hastily. She couldn’t help but wonder if rumours were floating around about her, or if anyone actually knew who the culprit was. So, she’s risk asking, even if it seemed like she was dwelling on the subject a bit. She lowered her ears slightly, her gaze trailing off again. At least there was a lot to look at in here! Her auds starting to raise curiously again, she noticed that if she looked closer at the store of herbs, there was actually a very wide array of colours. She never remembered seeing a lot of these things while out patrolling with Rowanstep; where in StarClan did the medicine cat find all of these? Ivorypaw made a silent vow to look more closely next time she went out into deeper TidalClan territory, and see what strange plants were actually out there.

Kindlestep had been pawing the last scoops of water into the seaweed dust, turning it into a nice sticky poultice and had started rubbing the excess off his paws. He didn't feel the need to glance back at ivorypaw to make sure she stayed off the cut paw, trusting her to listen to him. He did look back a her in a polite gesture when she asked him about the smell of the herbs and he chuckled " No, the smells never bothered me, even when I spent my time here as a kit. They all did blend together though, making it hard to learn the scents of each, but that disappeared with training and though all the smells seem to blend to you until you pick up a certain herb, I can smell each herb separately, know which ones I'm running low one, which are going bad, what I'm out of. To me, the smell of herbs is one of reassurance, it lets me know I have when I need to work with if something serious happens. " He purred as he explained. He wasn't lying, being surrounded by the smell of herbs kept him at his calmest, let him know he was in control. He crushed the and comfrey, mixing it into the poultice and looked over at her with a purr as she came back " Glad to hear a little bit of seaweed doesn't bother you that much, some of the warriors I get in here cry like kits! But they don't realize that because seaweed is naturally submerged in water, when reintroduced it takes longer to dry out unlike horsetail, and everyone knows once horsetail drys it's hard to get out of the fur and it itches, a lot! " He chuckled and nodded as she brought the right herb, mixing it in with the other herb in the seaweed.

He adjusted his sitting position and put all his weight on his hindlegs so that he was sitting up and free to use his forepaws. He gently put one paw under the paw she held out and gave it one last sniff, using his other paw to hook the marigold leaves one at a time to cover the entire cut " This will only sting for a bit, once the juices settle in it'll sooth it " He informed before starting to scoop a pawful of the mixed poultice and gently covering the entire paw in a thin coat of it. He looked up at her as she asked about the disturbed apprentices again " No, all they said was an apprentice had been writhing and squirming in pain, like they were being tortured. Some fo them said they didn't want to confront the apprentice to keep their ears intact, others asked if I had anything that they could give the apprentice so that the apprentice wouldn't feel ashamed about approaching me about it. But it's nothing to be ashamed of, it wasn't like it was unheard of for warriors and apprentices alike to suffer from vivid and constant nightmares or omens. And now, with the gates to both Starclan and Darkforest open the omens and nightmares could be stronger than ever, their world being so close to ours. It's a gift and a curse in one, a gift for being selected by either side to see what may come if things do or don't change, a curse for the terror and fear of the things they have to endure alone, and only when they realize that they are merely visions when they first see it, and be able to see the dream or nightmare through, will it end and the message must be relayed. Keeping it to themselves may also be making it worse, everyone needs someone to confide in, even the leader sometimes. Life is not a solo act, that's what makes it worth living. " He explained as he waited for the poultice to thicken and had wrapped it in seaweed strips securely by the time he finished talking. " Here, eat these poppyseeds, it'll sooth the pain in your paw and head from all my babbling! " He laughed, rinsing his paws off one last time in the stream and smiled at her " There all better! If you don't mind I'd like you to stay in camp for a little bit to let the poultice set, maybe go grab something to eat. " He rumbled, used to patients leaving right after treatment, he got up and started prepping the extra poultice to save for the next cat.

Nodding with genuine interest at what Kindledindle was saying, Ivorypaw imagined it must’ve taken a lot of training to become that disciplined with all those herbs. So much to keep track of, but in a way it was just like the small she-cat memorizing all of her battle moves. What to use and in what situations to use them… she could see the resemblance. Having never put much thought towards what medicine cats did, the small she-cat actually felt quite intrigued; it wasn’t everyday something interested her enough to get her to sit still. Well, not exactly still, but she wasn’t fidgeting as much as she usually did. And the TidalClan medicine cat actually seemed like a genuinely kind tom, and there was something about him that made Ivorypaw feel like she could confide whatever she wanted in the feline, almost like a big brother. Almost. Laughing at his remark of warriors crying like kits, she tried to weigh whether he meant it, or if it was just to help her feel better about her treatment. Deciding not to be so cynical, she couldn’t help but agree that it worked, and the apprentice held her paw with a bit more of a smirk. She had a pretty good tolerance for pain, and only winced a little bit when he finally got around to putting the poultice onto her scrape. She had managed to guard herself, and the warning of the stinging was one she was grateful for; it helped ward off a lot of the surprise that came with the initial tang. ”That…wasn’t as horribly awful as I was bracing myself for,” she exclaimed, audible relief in her voice as she released a breath she didn’t know she had been holding.

Raising her head again to meet his gaze, she managed to keep a bit of eye contact this time when he answered her question. This cat seemed to have endless patience with her pestering – it wasn’t everyday Ivorypaw could voice her mind without getting cuffed over the ear for being rude or disrespectful. Then again, she probably deserved it with some of the things she’s muttered in the past under her breath, a touch not quiet enough. But she didn’t feel a need to reply with snide retorts to Kindledindle; sure, sometimes he went on and on and on, but most of the stuff he said was genuinely interesting, and if Ivorypaw was to be the best warrior ever, she wanted to learn all she could about everything out there. ’ Life is not a solo act, that's what makes it worth living,’ some of the things the tom said seemed to echo in the smalls he-cat’s mind, and she mused over it curiously. Yeah. Maybe he was right; maybe Ivorypaw needed to learn to confide in others. Today wouldn’t be that day, but she took his advice to heart and nodded wordlessly, her blue gaze flashing in thoughtful honesty. Following his gaze to the poppy seeds, she chuckled slightly. ”Hah, no worries Kindledindle. What you said was helpful…thanks.” She licked up the tiny dark specks, feeling them stick to her tongue and working to swallow them as the medicine cat went back to washing his paws again. The seeds were too small to harbour any real taste, but something about them was soothing and natural, lulling enough even to make her eyelids feel a bit heavier than before. ”Awwwh’, I have to stay in camp?” she blinked in surprise, deflating slightly at being restricted. She had seen it coming, but the disappointment was still just as frustrating, and she stifled a sigh. ”Well, I’ll take your word for it. I guess I could continue training to be the best warrior ever tomorrow, I don’t think my title will be stolen before I get the chance to defend it later,” nodding and smiling slightly to herself again, she got to her paws and flicked her plume-like tail over at the patched feline. ”Thanks again! For the words and the seaweed,” and with her hasty goodbye, she skipped off into the main part of camp again, weighing how much trouble she’d get into if she were to sneak off again.
